Compendium - Canaries, Volume 2

Genetics, plumage colouration, colour canaries, hybrids

The second volume of the multi-part book series describes in a compact form all colourings of the colour canaries and the fascinating breeding of finch hybrids. In the general part, the interesting history of genetics and the mechanisms of plumage colouration are considered. The latest scientific findings are included. In the special part of the book, tried and tested advice is given on the standard-compliant breeding of colour canaries. All standardised colourings are presented in words and pictures. Furthermore, there are valuable hints on breeding hybrids between canaries and other finches or between different finch species. Many matings are discussed and presented with pictures. These topics are rounded off with the necessary hints for participation in judging competitions. In the appendix you will find a whole series of tables for the most diverse matings between individual canary colour varieties.

Norbert Schramm: Born in 1953; has been involved in breeding finches since his earliest youth. Since 1974 he has been a member of a traditional Dresden breeders' club and started breeding colour and posture canaries. Since 1985 he has been a trained judge for colour and posture canaries, carduelids, finch hybrids and later also for European birds. With the experimental breeding of many canary breeds and carduelid species he acquired extensive expert knowledge. His publications on the colouring of birds and the scientific presentation of canary colours developed from them made him well-known in professional circles. His first major work "Die Farbenkanarien" has become an important reference work for many breeders.
